An AI citation is a linked reference to a specific source or webpage that an AI system used to help generate or support a response. It matters because the citation is often the only link in the answer, and half of ChatGPT citations refer to business or service websites. Being that link puts your site in front of a buyer at the moment they ask.
When AI systems cite, and when they do not
A citation appears when the system retrieves information from an external source such as the live web or a product database, rather than its internal training data. When an AI system relies solely on its pre-trained knowledge to generate a response, it does not provide citations. The lookup step is called retrieval-augmented generation.
So the same assistant cites in some answers and not in others. In one test, about 42% of ChatGPT 4o responses included at least one citation without anyone asking for web search, across 12 varied prompts. Other systems cite every time: Google AI Mode and AI Overviews always provide citations because they are linked to traditional search by default.
Types of AI citations
There are three main types: informational, product and multimedia citations.
Informational citations are references to webpages or documents that the AI used to support a factual claim, explanation, or summary. This is the definition page or the how-to guide linked after a sentence.
Product citations point to product pages within AI-generated responses. These show up when someone asks what to buy or which tool to use.
Multimedia citations are references to image sources, video sources, or other multimedia content sources.
An example
Ask an AI assistant with web search "what is IndexNow". The answer gives a short definition, with a small numbered link after the sentence. That link is an informational citation, and the site behind it was picked because its page answered the question clearly.
Now ask "which tool checks if ChatGPT mentions my brand". The links now point at product pages and at tool roundup lists. Those are product citations, and the lists matter as much as the products: a list that names you can be the page that gets cited.
First-party and third-party citations
A first-party citation links to your own site. It can boost brand awareness, strengthen your brand image, and drive traffic to your website.
A third-party citation links to someone else's page. It still affects your business if the referenced content mentions your brand or your competitors. That is why getting onto the review sites and lists AI answers already cite is part of the work.
How to earn AI citations
Start with what gets cited. The content types most likely to earn citations are original research, case studies, thought leadership articles, news content, and brand content.
Then remove what stops it. The AI system has to be able to fetch your page, so check your AI crawler rules and make sure search bots are allowed. And write so a passage can be lifted on its own: the question as a heading, the answer in the first sentence below it.
How to check yours
Ask the questions your buyers ask, on each AI engine, and note which pages each answer links. Do it several times, because answers change between runs. For founders who build with Claude Code or Codex, Shipfound runs these repeated checks and records whether each engine names the product.
The traffic is worth tracking too. Semrush found visitors from AI search experiences are 4.4x more likely to convert than visitors from traditional search experiences.
Common mistakes
Checking once. One answer is a sample of one. Ask the same question again and the sources can change.
Blocking the wrong bots. Turning off AI training crawlers is fine, but a site that also blocks the search bots cannot be cited.
Mixing up the meanings. Students searching "AI citation" usually want to know how to cite ChatGPT in an essay. That is a different question, answered below.
Frequently asked questions
What does an AI citation look like?
Usually a small numbered link or a source card next to the sentence it supports, sometimes with a list of all sources at the end of the answer.
Is it okay to cite AI in academic work?
Yes, if you follow your style guide. MLA recommends citing generative AI when you quote, paraphrase, or otherwise incorporate AI-generated content into your work, and APA updated its guidance for citing generative AI in September 2025. The rules are still evolving and may differ by instructor, journal, or publisher.
How do I get ChatGPT to cite my site?
Make the page retrievable, answer the question in its first sentence, and get listed on the pages ChatGPT already cites. The full steps are in how to get your product named in ChatGPT answers.
