What is AI search optimization?

Updated 2026-10-16

AI search optimization is the process of building an online presence that helps your brand rank in AI-generated results. It matters because AI search does not hand people a list of links. It summarizes, synthesizes and repackages information into one answer, and the brands it cites are the ones buyers see.

How AI search works

On Google, the AI features use retrieval-augmented generation, also called grounding, which relies on core Search ranking systems to keep answers accurate and fresh. The model first pulls pages from the search index, then writes from them.

It rarely runs just one search. Google describes query fan-out, a set of concurrent, related queries the model generates to fetch more results. A page can be pulled in because it answers one of those related questions well, even if it is not the top result for the words the person typed.

The engine also looks past your own site. It checks sources outside your website, such as social media, directories and news coverage, to judge whether your content is valid.

Where you can show up

The obvious place is an AI citation or a brand name inside the answer itself. Two others depend on your business. A local business may see its name, address and phone number shown in generative AI. An online shop may see images and descriptions of its products in the results. There is also paid space: Google is placing ads beneath the AI Overview answer, drawn from existing Search and Shopping campaigns.

AI search optimization vs. SEO

SEO is optimizing your website to support organic rankings in search engines such as Google or Bing. With AI search optimization, you are playing a game of being cited as a reliable and helpful source.

The two overlap more than the new name suggests. Google says SEO best practices stay relevant because its AI features are rooted in core Search ranking and quality systems. What shifts is the emphasis. Generative AI favors content that answers a highly relevant question for your business or industry, and Google says content people find unique, compelling and useful will likely influence your presence in generative AI search more than other suggestions.

An example

Say you sell invoicing software. A buyer asks an AI engine which tool chases late payments. The engine fans out into related questions about reminder schedules and fees, pulls pages for each, and names a few products. You get named if your site has a clear page answering one of those questions, and if outside sources, such as a directory listing or a forum thread, back it up.

How to measure it

Rankings do not tell you much here. The useful check is asking an AI engine the questions your buyers ask and recording whether you are named and which pages are cited. Ask more than once, because answers change from one run to the next, and count how often you appear rather than trusting a single answer. That repeated check is called a visibility run.

If you build with Claude Code or Codex, Shipfound runs those repeated checks and records whether your product is named in each run, then ships the fixes and pages as pull requests.

Common mistakes

Writing commodity content is the big one. Google's example is a "7 Tips for First-Time Homebuyers" style page, built on common knowledge that could come from anyone. Google prefers first-hand reviews with a unique perspective over summaries that restate what is already available.

The other is publishing a page for every phrasing of a search. Google says creating separate content for every variation, mainly to manipulate rankings or AI responses, violates its scaled content abuse policy.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI search optimization called?

It goes by several names. It is also called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), and some people say answer engine optimization (AEO). They describe the same goal: being cited in AI answers.

What does AI optimization mean?

In search, it means making your content easy for AI systems to find, trust and cite. AI chatbots look for informational content and try to understand, trust and reference your brand.

Is SEO still relevant for AI search?

Yes. Google's AI features rely on its core Search ranking systems to retrieve pages, so a page that cannot rank or be indexed is unlikely to be cited. More on how that selection works in AI Overviews ranking factors.

Can I use AI tools to write the content?

You can, within Google's rules. Google says that if you use generative AI to help create content, the work must meet Search Essentials and its spam policies.
