Zero-click search is when a user finds their answer directly on the search engine results page without clicking through to any website. It matters because it is now the usual outcome: 58.5% of U.S. searches and 59.7% of E.U. searches ended without a click in 2024. If the answer names you, you can still win the buyer.
How zero-click search works
Search engines are designed to answer queries directly rather than routing users to source websites. The answer sits in a feature on the results page. The common ones are AI Overviews, featured snippets, knowledge panels, People Also Ask boxes, local packs, and image and video carousels.
Some of those answers come from structured sources. Knowledge panels and instant answers pull factual answers from Google's knowledge graph and structured data systems. Others are written on the spot by an AI model from the pages it retrieved.
How AI answers made it bigger
AI answers moved the finish line. The journey went from "search, click, scan, find answer" to "search, get answer". And Google shows them more often: AI Overviews were triggered for 13.14% of queries in March 2025, up from 6.49% in January 2025.
The same thing happens outside Google. When someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity which tool to use, the answer is the result. There may be a source link, but the reader often has what they came for.
An example
Someone searches "what is llms.txt". Google shows an AI Overview with a short definition and a few source links. They read it and close the tab. The site that wrote the definition got no visit.
But if the overview cites that site, the reader has now seen its name next to a correct answer. When they later need a tool for the job, that name is familiar. That is the trade zero-click search offers: fewer visits, more exposure.
How to spot it in your data
In Google Search Console, the sign is impressions going up while click-through rate goes down. One site's data showed impressions more than doubled from May 2024 to September 2025 while click-through rate fell from approximately 1.5% to under 0.5%. Nothing broke. More people saw the result and fewer needed to click.
Search Console cannot tell you whether the AI answer named you. For that, search your buyers' questions yourself, on Google and on the AI engines, and note whether you appear. Ask more than once, because AI answers change between runs. That repeated check is a visibility run.
What to do about it
Zero-click results can help a business grow by boosting visibility and brand awareness even without driving direct traffic to the site. So the goal moves from the click to being the source the answer uses.
That work is often called answer engine optimization (AEO), which optimizes for visibility and citations in AI-generated responses. In practice: answer the question in the first sentence of a section, mark up facts with structured data, and make sure AI crawlers are allowed to read the page. For founders who build with Claude Code or Codex, Shipfound ships those fixes as pull requests and checks in repeated runs whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google's AI name the product.
Common mistakes
Reading a falling click-through rate as failure. If impressions rise and the answer cites you, you may be reaching more buyers than before, just not on your site.
Chasing every zero-click query. Some searches are answered completely on the page, like a definition or a unit conversion, and a visit will rarely follow. Put your effort into questions where being named leads somewhere, such as "which tool should I use for this".
Writing for the click only. A page that hides the answer below a long intro gives the AI nothing to quote. Lead with the answer.
Frequently asked questions
Do most searches end without a click?
Yes, slightly more than half. In 2024, 58.5% of U.S. searches and 59.7% of E.U. searches ended without a click.
Is zero-click search bad for SEO?
It lowers clicks for questions the results page can answer. It does not lower the value of being the cited source, which still builds recognition with people who never visited.
What is zero-click content?
Content written so the answer works on the results page or in an AI answer: a clear definition, a short set of steps, a direct comparison. The aim is to be quoted and named, with a visit as a bonus.
